Reflecting on employees who consistently add value and those who don’t, it often comes down to “The 3 Cs.”

3 Cs guidance to HR decisions:

  • Core Values: Does the candidate have meaningful, clearly defined core values?  Are the candidate’s values aligned with those of the organization?  How has the candidate consistently demonstrated those values in prior roles?
  • Competencies: Does the candidate have both hard/technical skills and soft/people skills? Has the candidate demonstrated a commitment to continuously improving these skills?
  • Compatibility: Does the candidate have the temperament and commitment to get along well with internal customers and suppliers (i.e., peers, subordinates, bosses) as well as external customers and suppliers? How has the candidate demonstrated that commitment?
